ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

The below is an overview of the academic activities conducted in the Department of Mechatronic Engineering over the recent period. These events were organized with the aim of enriching students' technical knowledge, enhancing practical skills, and promoting overall personal and professional development. The following sections highlight key events and initiatives that reflect the department’s active engagement in fostering a dynamic learning environment.

1. INITIAL SEMINAR PRESENTATION – BATCH 21 MTE
The Department of Mechatronics Engineering conducted the Initial Seminar Presentation for the students of Batch 21 on 12th May 2025. This seminar was organized to review and assess the progress of students in their Final Year Projects, focusing on their research objectives, design methodologies, and practical implementation plans. The session featured Engr. Dur-e-Shehwar, Specialist Production Engineer at Dawlance and an alumna of Batch 19 (Mechatronics Engineering), as the external guest and industrial evaluator. She shared her professional insights and provided valuable feedback, guiding students on aligning their projects with industrial standards and expectations. The seminar proved to be a key academic activity, helping students identify areas of improvement and better prepare for the final phase of their FYPs.

 

2. WORKSHOP ON FUNDAMENTALS OF DEEP LEARNING
The Department of Mechatronics Engineering organized a two-day workshop titled "Fundamentals of Deep Learning" on 16th–17th April 2025, held in the department’s computer lab. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Muhammad Affan, an NVIDIA-certified instructor and PhD scholar from the Netherlands. Designed to introduce students to core concepts of artificial intelligence, the sessions covered deep learning models, neural networks, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and natural language processing (NLP) through interactive, hands-on activities. An official NVIDIA assessment was conducted at the conclusion of the workshop, and participants received certification upon successful completion. Special appreciation goes to Engr. Sawera from Batch 18 for her efforts in coordinating and initiating this impactful academic event.

  

 

3. FINAL YEAR PROJECT EXHIBITION – 20 BATCH
The Department of Mechatronics Engineering, MUET, organized a Final Year Project (FYP) Exhibition for 20 batch on 2nd dec, 2024, to showcase the innovative and practical projects developed by final-year students. The exhibition provided a platform for students to present their ideas, designs, and working prototypes to faculty of department, industry guests, and fellow students. Projects covered various mechatronics domains including automation, robotics, control systems, and embedded systems. The event reflected the students’ hard work, technical skills, and creativity, and highlighted the department's focus on hands-on learning and real-world application of engineering knowledge.


  

4. ARDUINO TRAINING IN MECHATRONIC APPLICATION

A hands-on training session on Arduino in Mechatronic Applications was organized from 18 to 28 November 2024, by Dr Saifullah Samo to enhance students’ practical understanding of embedded systems. The workshop focused on teaching participants how to use the basic functions of Arduino, interface various sensors and motors, and apply Arduino technology in basic mechatronic applications. Through guided exercises and mini-projects, students gained valuable experience in developing simple automated systems, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world implementation.


  


5. PLC WORKSHOP FOR BEGINNERS: HANDS-ON TRAINING
A practical workshop on PLC Programming and Applications was conducted on 14 to 17 October 2024, by Dr Saifullah Samo, with the objective of equipping participants with foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in industrial automation. The training focused on understanding the basics of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), developing ladder logic programs, and applying PLCs in real-world control systems such as motor and process control. Additionally, trainees learned how to integrate PLCs with various industrial devices, including sensors and actuators, enabling them to design and implement basic automated solutions commonly used in the industry.
  

6. Python in Action – A Comprehensive 2-Day Workshop on Python Programming
The Society of Artificial Intelligence and Learning (SAIL) from the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, MUET Jamshoro, organized a 2-day workshop titled "Python in Action" on August 15th and 16th, 2023, at the Computer Lab of the Mechatronics Engineering Department. The workshop was conducted by Saifullah Rahu, focusing on providing participants with practical knowledge of Python programming. Sessions were held from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, covering the basics of Python and its applications in engineering and automation.
This event aimed at building a strong programming foundation among Mechatronics students, enhancing their technical skills in line with the growing role of software in the engineering domain.
  

7. Practical Workshop on AI Tools and Applications
The Society of Artificial Intelligence and Learning (SAIL), Department of Mechatronics Engineering, MUET Jamshoro, organized a practical workshop titled "AI Tools Unleashed: Practical Workshop on AI Tools and Applications" on March 6th, 2024, held at the Computer Lab of the department. The session was conducted by students of the 22MTE batch — Miss Shadab, Miss Vansha, Miss Rimsha, and Mr. Nazar — who introduced various online AI tools and demonstrated their practical applications. The purpose of the workshop was to provide a hands-on learning experience while giving the presenters an opportunity to improve their soft skills and technical communication. The event was well-received by participants, who gained practical insights into the use of AI tools in daily tasks and academic projects.


  

8. WORKSHOP ON MICROCONTROLLERS, SENSORS, AND ACTUATORS
The Department of Mechatronics Engineering, in collaboration with the Mechatronics Society of Robotics and Automation (MSRA) at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, organized a comprehensive three-day workshop titled "A Complete Guide to Microcontrollers, Sensors, and Actuators." Led by Engr. Manzoor Ahmed, a seasoned Mechatronics engineer and Application Engineer at NET2 APPs, the workshop provided students with hands-on experience in Arduino programming, sensor integration, actuator control, and circuit design using Tinkercad. Participants received certificates of participation, strengthening their practical skillset and reflecting on the department’s commitment to preparing students for innovation and excellence in the field of mechatronics and robotics.

Extra-curricular activities

The Mechatronics Engineering Department at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, encourages students to take part in extra-curricular activities along with their studies. These activities help students build confidence, improve communication skills, and work better in teams. The department regularly arranges events like workshops, seminars, competitions, and social activities to give students a chance to learn new things outside the classroom. This report covers the extracurricular events held during the academic term and shows how the department supports overall student growth.

1. Media Literacy Awareness Session: Strengthening Digital Responsibility at MUET
The Media Literacy Awareness Session was conducted on 15th May 2025 at Prof. Dr. Haji Mehmood Senate Hall, MUET Jamshoro. It was organized by the Directorate of Media and Publications in collaboration with the Registrar Office of MUET. The session aimed at promoting critical thinking, responsible media consumption, and awareness about misinformation and digital safety among students, faculty, and staff.
Mr. Lachman Das Sothar, Registrar of MUET, attended the session as the chief guest. The session was led by Mr. Ashfaque Laghari, a seasoned media writer and columnist, who delivered an informative and interactive talk supported by presentations, videos, and real-life examples. The session focused on the role of media in society, identifying fake news and disinformation, responsible social media use, and fact-checking strategies. Through discussions and activities, attendees learned how media manipulation occurs and how to recognize it. The session enhanced digital awareness, deepened understanding of media influence, and promoted ethical, informed engagement with digital platforms.

2. MUET Wins 1st Position at PUDC Regional Round

A proud moment for Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, as its Debating Team secured 1st position in the Urdu category at the Pakistan Universities Debate Championship (PUDC) – Regional Round (Sindh) organized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) at NED University, Karachi. The winning team included Mr. Abdul Ghaffar Dars (21-Batch, Mechatronics), Ms. Sania Amjad (21-Batch, BS English), and Mr. Zeeshan Talpur (23-Batch, Software). Under the guidance of Focal Person Engr. Faiz Ahmed Abro, the team earned the Championship Trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 100,000. Their excellent performance is a source of pride for MUET, and we wish them continued success in the upcoming national round.


  

3. Startup Training Workshop on Entrepreneurship as a Career
A startup training workshop on "Entrepreneurship as a Career" was conducted on 15th April at 11:00 AM in Makhdoom Dawood Hall. The session aimed at inspiring students to explore entrepreneurship by transforming their ideas, projects, and passions into real-world ventures beyond the classroom environment. The workshop provided valuable insights into the entrepreneurial mindset, startup development process, and the opportunities available for aspiring innovators. It served as a motivating platform for students to consider entrepreneurship as a viable and rewarding career path.

  


4. Faculty Ambassador Training Session at BIC MUET
The Business Incubation Center (BIC) at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) organized a Faculty Ambassador Training Session on 8th April 2025 at the U.S.-Pakistan Center for Advanced Studies in Water. The session brought together faculty representatives from 26 departments and directorates to strengthen their role in supporting student entrepreneurship and innovation. Key speakers included Prof. Dr. Arabella Bhutto, Sana Shah, and Dr. Zeeshan Khatri, who shared valuable insights on building entrepreneurial ecosystems, connecting students with startup resources, and guiding them in transforming academic knowledge into business ventures. The session highlighted the important role of faculty ambassadors in shaping the success of MUET’s upcoming student startup initiatives and promoting a culture of innovation across the university.

5. IEEE RAS MUET Collaborates with Hult Prize MUET
IEEE RAS MUET proudly collaborated with Hult Prize MUET, contributing to an enriching and impactful experience. It was a privilege to work alongside the Team Hult Prize, with special appreciation for Zain (Deputy Director, Hult Prize MUET) for his dedication and efforts in making the event a success. Representing IEEE RAS from the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, our Chair, Vice-Chair, and General Secretary actively participated, fostering innovation and entrepreneurial spirit within the competition. We are honored to be part of Hult Prize MUET, a platform that nurtures business ideas, startups, and change-makers at our university.

  

  

6. Achievement at Six Sigma Convention
We are proud to share that Dur-e-Shehwar, one of the most talented students from the 19-Batch, Department of Mechatronics Engineering, MUET, presented two of her projects at the prestigious Six Sigma Convention organized by Dawlance in Karachi. She also successfully passed the Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Exam, earning official certification from Arçelik, Türkiye. This remarkable achievement reflects her dedication, hard work, and technical excellence.


  

 

  7. Outstanding Diplomatic Award at AAMUN

The Department of Mechatronics Engineering is pleased to highlight the achievement of Abdul Ghaffar (21-MTE-020), a student of Mechatronics Engineering and an active member of the Mehran University Debating and Dramatic Society (MUDDS). He was awarded the Outstanding Diplomatic (OD) Award at the Aam Aadmi Model United Nations (AAMUN) held in Karachi. Abdul Ghaffar participated as a delegate representing Ahsan Iqbal in the Pakistan National Assembly (PNA) committee, where he demonstrated excellent diplomatic, communication, and leadership skills. His performance stood out among participants from various institutions and brought recognition to both MUDDS and the Mechatronics Department.


8. Internship Awareness Session for 23-MTE Batch
The Department of Mechatronics Engineering organized an informative session for the students of the 23-MTE Batch, aimed at enhancing their understanding of internship opportunities and industrial exposure. The session featured Mr. Hammad Rajput, a 3rd-year Mechatronics Engineering student, who shared his insightful experiences and practical knowledge gained during his summer internship at Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). His presentation provided valuable guidance and motivation to fellow students preparing for their own industrial training.

9. Industry Insights Seminar: Essential Interview Skills for Success
A one-day seminar titled "Industry Insights: Essential Interview Skills for Success" was organized by the Mechatronics Society of Robotics and Automation (MSRA) at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro. The session was led by Engr. Dur-e-Shehwar Qurbaan, a Specialist Production Engineer at Dawlance and a graduate of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, MUET. The seminar focused on equipping students with essential interview skills necessary to secure internships and job placements in reputable industries. Engr. Dur-e-Shehwar shared her personal experiences and professional journey, including successful internships at PepsiCo and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), and job placements at HUB Power Company – Thar Site and Dawlance. Through interactive discussions and practical guidance, students learned key techniques for interview preparation, resume building, and professional communication. The seminar provided a valuable opportunity for students to understand industry expectations and how to effectively present themselves in competitive job markets. At the conclusion of the event, certificates of participation were distributed to all attendees, recognizing their enthusiasm and commitment to enhancing their career readiness.


  

10. Roadmap to Success: Crafting Your Undergraduate Career Vision
The Mechatronics Society of Robotics and Automation (MSRA) at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, successfully organized a one-day seminar titled "Roadmap to Success: Crafting Your Undergraduate Career Vision". The session was conducted by Sir Khawaja Raza Mehdi, Technical Training Head at HUB Power Company Limited – Thar Site and a recognized expert in power plant operations and technical training. The seminar aimed to help students develop a clear vision for their undergraduate journey, with a focus on setting goals and aligning academic efforts with future career aspirations. Sir Khawaja Raza shared valuable insights into building professional profiles, particularly by leveraging platforms like LinkedIn to explore opportunities and network with industry professionals.
The session emphasized the importance of self-reflection, goal clarity, and learning from experienced seniors and mentors in the field. It also encouraged students to be proactive in their professional development through consistent learning and engagement. This seminar provided a valuable platform for students to gain motivation, direction, and practical strategies to shape their future paths.


  

11. Ace the Career Journey
The Society of Artificial Intelligence and Learning (SAIL), a student organization established in 2022 within the Department of Mechatronics Engineering, MUET Jamshoro, organized an insightful webinar titled "Ace the Career Journey" on July 20, 2023, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Computer Lab, Department of Mechanical Engineering. The session was conducted by Mr. Mohsin Ali Memon, who shared practical knowledge on CV building, interview tips, and strategies for career development. His talk offered students valuable guidance to better prepare for job opportunities and succeed in professional environments. This event was part of SAIL’s ongoing mission to empower Mechatronics students with the latest industry-relevant skills and knowledge in AI and career planning.


 

  
12. Exploring Scholarships Worldwide: Path to Global Education
The Society of Artificial Intelligence and Learning (SAIL), Department of Mechatronics Engineering, MUET Jamshoro, organized a webinar titled "Exploring Scholarships Worldwide: Path to Global Education" on September 28, 2023, conducted via Microsoft Teams. The session featured Mr. Dheeraj Kumar as the guest speaker, who shared valuable insights on scholarship opportunities available in Australia for higher education. The webinar provided students with useful information on eligibility criteria, application procedures, and tips to enhance their chances of receiving international scholarships. This initiative aimed to encourage students to explore global academic avenues and prepare effectively for their educational pursuits abroad.

Mechanical Excellence Society (MechES)

 

  1. Lecture on Mastering the Art of Presentation

An event was organised on 25th April 2019 by MechES at Department of Mechanical Engineering, MUET where guest speaker Prof. Dr. Adnan Ashraf Arain delivered Lecture on the topic " Mastering the Art of Presentation" to undergraduate students of the Department. The Chief guest of the event was Prof. Dr. Rizwan Ahmed Memon ( Incharge Chairman/Director MIS).

IEEE Robotics and Automation Society - MUET

About:

IEEE Robotics and Automation Society - MUET Student Branch Chapter has been established in 2014 to become the meeting place of choice for the intrested Students and Professionals in Robotics and Automation in Mehran University of Engineering and Technology. The Chapter will unite the Students and promote Robotics and Automation in the Mehran UET. The specific objectives of the MUET RAS Chapter are the following:  

  • Serve as an interdisciplinary forum for exchanging ideas in research and development among Robotics and Automationresearchers in MUET.
  • Hold a number of meetings which are of interest to the members and reflect applications and technical advancement in the area of Robotics and Automation.       
  • Disseminate the Robotics and Automation knowledge to Students, Researchers and Engineers through promoting and sponsoring scientific activities in the area of Robotics and Automation.    
  • Organize a mix of educational and Research Workshops,Symposiums, Seminars, Robotics Competitions and invited talks to raise the awareness of Robotics and Automation and to attract New Researchers and Engineers to this growing field.       
  • Promote the applicability of Robotics and Automation to pertinent areas of Industrial and Commercial importance.

1. Workshop on Lego EV3 Mind Storm Kits (July 2015)  (in which 152 students participated).

 

2. IEEE Robotics and Automation Society MUET Chapter executive council celebrated IEEE-DAY at muet auditorium on (7th october 2015).

The IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (IEEE RAS), MUET students branch chapter was established in MUET on 2014. Since then, the Chapter has organized several events for the benefit of students of MUET under the banner of IEEE. The IEEE RAS organized Student Poster Competition (SPoC’16) on 20th April in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. This was made possible due to the efforts of IEEE RAS student chapter’s team led by Advisor Dr. Jawaid Daudpoto and Chair, Owais Rasool.

As many as 14 posters were received, which were divided into two categories:
1. Post-Grad Posters: In all, seven posters were received under the postgraduate category. Although the competition was open to students from any postgraduate program. All the seven entries were from students of Mechatronic Engineering. Amongst those critically acclaimed posters were: Design and Development of experimental bed to characterize shape memory alloy actuators using experimental test bed (Mohammad Ali Soomro), agricultural data acquisition system for decision support (Awais Memon), EMG sensor for crime alarming purpose (Ali Akbar Shah), Improving the cycle of Nickel-Titanium based shape memory alloy (Atta Muhammad Nizamani) and Design and development of shape memory alloy actuated exoskeleton finger (Nirma Sheikh).
2. Under-Grad Posters: In this category seven posters were received. Six posters were from students of Mechanical Engineering and one from group of students from Electronic Engineering. The entries included: Ultrasonic blind helper stick (Owais Rasool), Design and importance of anti-lock braking system (Salman Shalwani), Rescue robot using grid based navigator system (Abu Bakkar) and Decentralized multi-robot task allocation (Fatima Zareen).
Dean Faculty of Engineering Abdul Hafeez Memon, inaugurated the competition. Dean FEECE, Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry, visited the competition and praised the students for their hard work. Chairman of Mechanical Engineering Department; Dr. Dur Muhammad Pathan, and Advisor IEEE RAS MUET Student branch Chapter Dr. Jawaid Daudpoto, Prof. Dr. Rizwan Memon welcomed guests and thanked them for their valuable time. The posters were judged by the faculty members from Department of Mechanical Engineering and Dr. Imtiaz Kalwar, Dr. Winod Kumar (Electronic Engineering), Dr. Ahsan Ursani (Chairman, Department of Biomedical Engineering). The results of the competition will be announced shortly and award distribution ceremony will be held after summer vacations.
Events like these are set to motivate and groom the upcoming breed of Engineers so that they can represent their work boldly.
